ClimateFarmDemo (European-wide Network of Pilot Farmers for a Carbon Neutral Europe)

The general objective of the project is to raise awareness and accelerate the adoption of Climate Smart Farming practices among farmers and stakeholders within the Climate Smart Agriculture Knowledge & Innovation System (AKIS). The project uses a multi actor approach by connecting 1500 Pilot Demo Farmers and their Climate Farm Advisors at European and national levels to increase knowledge exchange to further support adaptation to climate change and to achieve a carbon neutral agricultural sector by 2050, thereby meeting the targets of the EU Climate strategy.

The transition to sustainable agriculture is a long process that requires consideration of how innovations connect with and influence changes in mainstream farming systems. Therefore, the project aims to strengthen the capacities of European farmers to implement climate-friendly farming practices across the EU. This intails:

  1. Establishing a network of pilot farmers to facilitate knowledge exchange.
  2. Providing advice and support to pilot farmers in implementing and demonstrating climate-friendly agricultural practices.
  3. Promoting the adoption of climate-friendly agricultural practices across Europe.

In practical terms, this will be achieved by establishing an EU network of 1,500 pilot demo farms in 27 EU countries, with 80 partners from 24 EU member states, the UK, Serbia and Switzerland. This network will cover all European pedo-climate zones and agricultural sectors.

Additionally, the project will involve co-creation of a set of new and innovative climate-smart solutions in 10 multi-actor Living Labs (LL). Lessons learned from the implementation of the LL approach will inform scale-up efforts and future multi-actor partnerships for climate-smart innovation and application.

Technical and social innovations across various thematic areas will be demonstrated to the wider farming community through six annual demo-campaigns (consisting of 4500 demo-events), which will support interactive and peer-to-peer learning.

Furthermore, new and innovative Climate Smart Farming solutions will be co-created in 10 Living Labs spread across Europe, and the insights gained from multi-actor innovation will be shared and scaled.
