02.07.2024 | 13:11

On June 18, 2024, a thematic online workshop titled 'Innovations in Forestry' brought together experts and stakeholders from Europe. Organized by the Rural Networks of Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Poland, this event was part of the 'Network to Innovate' initiative, a significant effort that began in 2021 and fosters collaboration through a series of online and physical events.

The recent workshop focused on innovative solutions in forestry, showcasing various strategies and projects to enhance forest health and sustainability. A notable discussion underlined the concept of Health Forests in Finland. This model integrates nature's scientifically proven health benefits into the official healthcare system, demonstrating how nature can promote well-being.

Another significant topic was the impact of root rot in forestry, specifically in Estonia, where it causes an estimated annual damage of 8.5 million euros. The project highlighted the potential of biocontrol methods as a promising solution to mitigate this damage.

The issue of invasive black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) in European forests was also addressed. Discussions involved traditional and alternative methods to reduce its occurrence and explored the use of black cherry biomass in producing composites, showcasing a sustainable approach to managing invasive species.

The project from Latvia emphasized a "bottom-up" approach to forest management, aiming to facilitate additional removals of carbon dioxide (CO2) and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Education and motivation of forest managers were highlighted as crucial to achieving climate neutrality through appropriate forestry practices.
Overall, the workshop "Innovations in Forestry" exemplified the innovative approaches being adopted to manage and protect forests while contributing to global health and climate goals.
