Innovation in wine: a perspective from the Nordic-Baltic region

08.11.2024 | 08:44

On October 22, 2024, wine enthusiasts and industry experts came together for an inspiring online workshop. Organized by the Rural Networks of Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Poland, "Innovation in Wine: Nordic-Baltic Perspectives" highlighted the bold innovations driving wine production across Northern Europe, showcasing the creativity and expertise emerging from these countries.

Discovering Estonian flavours

The workshop opened with Tiina Kuuler, who introduced the audience to the promising developments of the Estonian Winetrail. This initiative highlights a new and exciting terroir being explored by local producers and adventurous tourists alike. Comprising 21 family-run wineries, a dedicated restaurant, and the Estonian Wine Chamber, the collective is determined to elevate Estonia's presence in the wine industry. Despite challenges such as stringent advertising laws and high local taxes, the community flourishes through cooperation, resource sharing, and joint marketing efforts. Their collaboration with the Estonian University of Life Sciences to refine winemaking techniques further solidifies their innovative approach.

Interestingly, these Estonian pioneers are not solely focused on profitability – they are fostering a cultural movement. The Winetrail is not merely a path through picturesque vineyards; it offers an immersive experience that invites visitors to engage with the living narrative of Estonian tradition, innovation, and the harmonious relationship between nature and humans.

Ainoa Winery: Finland's forests in a bottle

Next, David Cohen shared the journey of Ainoa Winery, a venture founded by passionate immigrants eager to harness Finland's natural bounty. Over two decades, the winery has mastered the craft of creating exceptional wines from local fruits, establishing Finland's ability on the global wine map. Committed to reflecting the unique terroir of Finnish forests, Ainoa' strives to capture the essence of the fruit without mimicking traditional grape flavours.

What makes Ainoa truly fascinating is its deep respect for Finland's environment. The founders have turned a winemaking vision into a mission that champions environmental sustainability without compromising quality. Their story is not just about wine; it's about preserving the unique ecosystems of Finland and promoting a sustainable way of celebrating local flavours.

Latvian varietals rising

Offering insights from Latvia, Niklass Barkans of ABAVAS vīna darītava discussed the potential nestled within Latvian grape varieties such as Zilga. As climate conditions warm, opportunities abound to bolster their vineyards. Barkans emphasised precision winemaking practices, underscoring the importance of site selection and winter protection to enhance wine quality and gain international recognition.

Latvia is now on the brink of redefining its winemaking identity. With warmer winters forecasted, the future holds promise not only for enhanced variety but also for the possibility of Latvian wines stepping confidently onto the international stage, a prospect that fills the industry with optimism and hope.

Advancing Polish winemaking technologies

Rounding out the presentations, Dr. Iwona Szot from Poland's University of Life Sciences in Lublin highlighted cutting-edge research into using inert gases during winemaking. By altering chemical compositions and boosting sensory qualities, her team aims to craft wines that boast both exquisite taste and health benefits. This innovative approach promises to redefine standards for white and rosé wines, emphasising their phenolic richness and antioxidant potency.

In a time when health and well-being are more critical than ever, these advances could position Polish wines as not just a taste experience but a health-conscious choice. Dr. Szot's research could pave the way for a new era in which wines can contribute to a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

A collaborative future for Nordic-Baltic wines

The workshop concluded with an engaging discussion among participants, addressing key industry challenges such as production volumes, market expansion, and the effects of climate change. As the Nordic-Baltic region continues to establish its presence in the global wine market, the insights and innovations shared during this workshop underscore the potential for a collaborative and adaptive future. Against the backdrop of these stunning northern landscapes, a new chapter in winemaking is unfolding — one that celebrates creativity, resilience, and a shared dedication to excellence.

As these regions navigate their environmental and political challenges, their commitment to innovation not only promises economic benefits but also enriches the cultural fabric of the Nordic-Baltic area — a true testament to the ingenuity and spirit of the region!
