TEM-TA3 - Development of biocontrol agents to reduce chemical pesticides in plant disease management

Project “Development of biocontrol agents to reduce chemical pesticides in plant disease management” (TEM-TA3) is a research project co-funded by the European Union and the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research. The project is carried out in collaboration between the Centre of Estonian Rural Research and Knowledge and research teams from the University of Tartu. The project runs from April 2024 to December 2028.

About the Project:

In cooperation between the Centre of Estonian Rural Research and Knowledge (METK) and the University of Tartu, it is being determined whether yeasts isolated from Estonian nature can be applied in the biological control of plant diseases. Intersectoral cooperation is being developed with members of the farmers' cooperative KEVILI in order to speed up the application of research results under real production conditions, and potential biocontrol yeasts are being tested in demonstration trials.

Project objectives:

  • determine yeast-based biocontrol agents, which are well adapted to the local Estonian climatic and agronomic conditions,
  • develop the combination of biological and chemical plant protection agents for more effective disease control.

Expected results:

  • development of new biocontrol agents of local origin,
  • more efficient crop disease control by combining biological and chemical fungicide agents,
  • reduction in chemical fungicide applications,
  • minimized development and spread of fungicide resistance in the pathogen population,
  • increased food safety.
