SEA2LAND (Producing advanced bio-based fertilizers from fisheries wastes)

SEA2LAND aims to provide solutions to help overcome challenges related to food production, climate change and waste reuse. Based on the circular economy model, the EU-funded SEA2LAND project promotes the production of large-scale fertilisers in the EU from own raw materials, i.e. to produce bio-based fertilisers from fish and aquaculture processing by-products.

European agriculture is highly dependent on external sources for the supply of key fertilizers, while large amounts of minerals enter the environment through various organic waste streams. The project proposes a solution that should reduce soil nutrient imbalances in Europe. The project will work on improving and adapting nutrient recovery technologies to produce bio-based fertilisers (BBF) from fish and aquaculture processing by-products.  

SEA2LAND optimizes technologies, some of which are combined – advanced composting, bio-drying, freeze-concentration and extraction, algal production, pyrolysis, membrane technology, chitin extraction, thermomechanical fractionation, enzymatic hydrolysis – which create bio-based and customized ready-to-use fertilizers, both for local crops and conditions for export.

The project is based on the regional production of BBFs, developing demonstration pilots that can be replicated across Europe, accelerating local growth. The project proposes to implement nine technologies in 7 cases in 6 areas representing the fishing sector.

The technologies are applied to various by-products of the seafood processing and aquaculture sectors and produce several BBFs for either local crops and conditions and others for export. Besides, the effects on soil biodiversity, environmental sustainability and the impact on social parameters and local economy will be studied and business plans will be defined.

The coordinator of the project is NEIKER Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development, Spain. There are 27 participants from 11 EU countries in the project.
