The cooperation was launched in the autumn when METK's management visited Luke in Finland. At a follow-up meeting in Estonia, the Memorandum of Cooperation was signed, and METK presented its facilities in Jõgeva and Saku to Luke's management. The focus topics of the follow-up meeting were soil, agrotechnology, plant biotechnology, and plant breeding, including new breeding techniques and crops.

Both organizations face similar challenges, which underscores the importance of our cooperation. One of these common challenges is adaptation to climate change, where Luke acknowledges that they have much to learn from Estonia, as our climate mirrors their future climate. The visitors were also impressed by the laboratory center in Saku, a testament to our shared commitment to professionalism and cutting-edge technology.

Andre Veskioja, Director of METK, highlighted the mutual benefits of the cooperation, stating that Estonia and Finland share similar challenges that can be more effectively addressed through collaboration. "In addition to the changing climate, low-added-value food products are a common challenge. By pooling our experience, equipment, skills, and people, we can tackle these challenges more effectively," he said.

Looking ahead, our future plans involve regular meetings and establishing cooperation at the research department level. This will encompass a wide range of areas, including research, genetics, scientific exchanges, data management, artificial intelligence, and the development of research infrastructure. These commitments ensure that our collaboration will be sustained and fruitful, instilling confidence in our shared goals.

The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is a research organization operating under Finland's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Luke's task is to promote competitive business based on the sustainable use of renewable natural resources and the well-being and vitality of rural areas.
