Hosted by METK and the Estonian Rural Network, the delegation spent two days in East-Viru County during the tenth nationwide Open Farm Day. This popular event attracted an impressive 310,000 visits, surpassing last year's attendance despite some rain.
The group had the opportunity to tour local farms and companies in North-East Estonia. The study trip began with the "Open Farm Day" ceremony at Koolmeister Farm in Lüganuse parish, a charming farm recognized by the President of Estonia with the Beautiful Home Award.
One of the highlights was a visit to Purtse Brewery in a historic 15th-century blacksmith shop at Purtse Castle. The brewery's scenic and historical setting attracted beer enthusiasts and art lovers.
Wiru Mill OÜ was another exciting stop. This family-run business produces organic buckwheat products, including flour, cookies, and crispbreads, showcasing the creativity of local entrepreneurs. The Miner's House offered a taste of local life, with its nostalgic setting and welcoming atmosphere, while the Dog School BEST featured a unique blend of a home café and dog training centre.
At Siimu Farm, the focus was on horses, with opportunities for training and competitions in equestrian sports. Kuuse Beekeeping Farm impressed visitors with its experimental honey flavours, such as ginger and cherry.
The trip had a profound impact on the participants, as evidenced by their feedback. Teemu Hauhia from the Finnish Rural Network found it very insightful, saying:
The visit gave us many new ideas for improving the Finnish Local Food Day. This underlines the value and significance of such study trips in fostering learning and innovation.
Tuomas Metsäniemi appreciated the warm welcome and dedication of the Estonian farmers, stating, "Their passion and knowledge made the visit truly memorable."
Adriana Borsellino from the EU CAP Network was inspired by how locals creatively used their products. She noted, "The community's commitment to their local area was inspiring and made the visits enjoyable and educational."
This trip strengthened ties and shared knowledge between Finland and Estonia and highlighted the vibrant and innovative spirit of rural communities in both countries.
