FabaNova (Climate-ready faba beans for the Nordic and Baltic Region)

The overall aim of this project is to develop improved germplasm in faba bean for the Nordic and Baltic countries, along with deeper understanding of the genetic factors underlying that improvement and selection tools for use in practical plant breeding.

Project activities will investigate:

  • chocolate spot disease as an important biotic stress;
  • drought as an important abiotic stress;
  • early maturity as an important adaptation factor.

Within each of those factors (chocolate spot disease, drought resistance, earliness of flowering and maturity) there are a series of specific activities planned that are divided into two themes:

1. Plants adapted to the future conditions of the Nordic and Baltic countries.
2. Greater local and regional protein production for food and feed.

The Project plans to improve the adaptation of the bean as a protein crop to future conditions in the Nordic and Baltic countries. Both biotic and abiotic stresses and the root zone are dealt with. Better germplasm provides the basis for improved cultivars. Development of disease risk models and decision support systems with agrotechnical practices and decision support tools are engaged in.

The project will lead to improved faba bean lines and knowledge that can lead to higher and more stable protein yields in our challenging environment, increasing regional protein security and decreasing the pressure for land-use change in soybean-producing countries.
