Evolution and fitness penalties of fungicide-resistant Zymoseptoria tritici population in Estonia

The project aims to study the development and adaptation of the winter wheat pathogen, Zymoseptoria tritici, to Estonian conditions. Project is funded by the Estonian Research Council as personal research funding of starting grants (PSG827).

Project aims to:

  • profile the agriculturally important plant pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici, the causal agent of septoria tritici blotch (STB),
  • analyze the evolution and fitness penalties of Z. tritici fungicide-resistant isolates in Estonia,
  • apply rapid diagnostics of fungicide-resistant Z. tritici.

Expected outcome:

  • improved crop disease prevention and control strategies, 
  • prolonged effectiveness of fungicides,
  • minimized development and spread of fungicide resistance in the pathogen population.
