Assessment of soil functional biodiversity

METK Saku Laboratory is conducting a pilot project in collaboration with Dutch technology company Antonie to assess the state of soil functional biodiversity using LIFE Monitor™ technology. The method is based on determining the abundance and composition of nematodes and calculating nematode-based indices (NBIs) that describe the balance, diversity, and disturbance level of soil biota.

In cooperation with Dutch technology company Antonie, METK Saku Laboratory offers the opportunity to assess the functional life of agricultural soils using LIFE Monitor™ technology. This is a practical monitoring solution that helps to make the biological functioning of soil visible and comparable both between fields and over time.

What does the pilot project offer?

1. Assessment of soil functional biology based on nematodes

LIFE Monitor™ uses high-throughput image analysis and automated nematode detection to determine nematode abundance and composition. Based on this data, nematode-based indices (NBIs) are calculated to describe:

  •        soil biota balance

  •        disturbance level

  •       system development trend

  •       changes over time due to different practice

The system creates a time-stamped image bank, which allows samples to be re-analyzed in the future as models and interpretations improve.


2. Baseline data and possibility of repeat measurements

Participation in the project provides your fields with baseline data on the current state of the functional biota in the soil and creates a basis for repeat measurements. Nematodes often react quickly to changes in the soil, which means that the method also allows the impact of practices to be assessed during the season, for example:

  • cultivation methods
  • addition of organic matter
  • intercropping
  • changes in crop rotation
  • fertilization strategies
  • plant protection practices

A time perspective is important for identifying meaningful patterns. Although this pilot project will last until the summer, a reliable assessment of biological trends in the soil requires at least three years of monitoring. The interest and participation of producers is crucial to ensure that the technology can continue to be used in Estonia after the pilot project.

3. Early bird advantage

Antonie's analysis model is constantly evolving. As new data is added, classifications and interpretations are refined. As an early participant, you will:

  • receive the source data at a discounted price
  • contribute to the adaptation of the model to Estonian conditions
  • gain early access to comparative data and updated interpretations

Why nematodes?

Nematodes are a central part of the soil food web and are found in almost every soil. They are divided into different feeding groups and react quickly to changes in the environment and management practices. Therefore, the structure of the nematode community is a good reflection of the functional status of the soil. In practical production, this means:

Disturbed system

Nutrient release is uneven and depends more on external inputs. The soil structure is weaker and the system is sensitive to climatic and management stress.

More stable system

Nutrient cycling is more balanced, soil structure is more resilient, and plants receive nutrients more evenly. The system is more tolerant of drought and excess moisture and supports yield stability in the long term.

Price and registration

The start of sampling depends on weather conditions, but according to the initial plan, we will begin in March. All participants will also have the opportunity to attend an information session where we will introduce the methodology, schedule, and practical steps. In addition, participants will have access to a web-based collaboration platform where they can find guidance materials and sample reports and ask questions throughout the project.

Sampling methodology

Samples are collected using the composite sampling method:

  • 1 sample per 2–5 ha, depending on the variability of the field

Sampling can be carried out by the producer themselves according to the instructions. To ensure methodological consistency and convenience, it is possible to order sampling from the METK soil sampling team.

In this case, a sampling fee of €12 + tax per sample will be added.

It is also possible to integrate existing soil data (e.g. previous analyses, yield maps).
To ensure comparability:

  • GPS coordinates are recorded
  • the soil type and field condition are described
  • the sampling time and conditions are noted
  • the same protocol is followed for repeat measurements

Comparison and cooperation

We recommend selecting at least two fields with different management practices (e.g., different crop rotation or tillage methods) to enable meaningful comparison. In addition, we plan to form feedback groups for different types of producers in order to:

  • compare results between producers with similar practices
  • discuss practical conclusions
  • support joint learning and exchange of experiences

Price

Within the framework of the pilot project:

  • €80 + tax/sample
  • 10-sample package: €750 + tax
  • If sampling is carried out by METK, €12 + tax/sample will be added.
